Revival of Mela Chiraghan at Shalimar Gardens by Government of Punjab


Lahore, 9 April 2025 (The Hind Canadian Times) : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, the Government of Punjab is reviving the historic Mela Chiraghan at Shalimar Gardens after 67 years, celebrating the region’s cultural and Sufi heritage.

"Following the special directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, this festival will not only honor Punjab’s rich Sufi legacy but also offer the public a unique recreational and spiritual experience."

Organized by the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), this 4 days event reflects the Punjab government's dedication to preserving and promoting this historic tradition.
This four-day festival will be held from April 11, 2025, to April 14, 2025, at the Shalimar Gardens and shrine of Madho Lal Hussain, featuring a diverse range of events during the day and night. Daytime activities will include lectures by scholars and historians, panel discussions on the teachings of Shah Hussain, recitations of his Kafis, and Punjabi poetry sessions. The evening events will feature Sufi folk qawali performances, gatherings of Sufi saints, Heer recitals, traditional food stalls, and a local handicrafts bazaar. The historic sacred bonfire, where devotees light candles and oil lamps as part of the rituals, will also be rekindled. This Mela will be exclusively for families. Special security arrangements and facilities have been put in place under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to provide attendees with a comfortable and secure environment.

Mela Chiraghan has been a cultural symbol of Lahore for centuries, aimed at keeping the region’s traditions and Sufi values alive. This festival will play a key role in promoting public culture, love, spiritual awakening, and the message of peace and harmony. 

Director General Walled City of Lahore Authority Kamran Lashari stated that:

"Mela Chiraghan is a symbol of Lahore’s cultural identity, and its revival reflects our commitment to preserving our heritage. This festival not only honors the legacy of Sufi poet Shah Hussain but also serves as a platform to promote inclusivity, creativity, and traditional arts. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this grand event, reconnecting with our roots, and keeping the spirit of Lahore alive."
