SKAGIT COUNTY (WASHINGTON), Oct 16,2026 : Skagit County is preparing to celebrate the completion of two significant infrastructure projects in the eastern part of the county—the reopening of the historic Marblemount Bridge following extensive rehabilitation and the completion of a temporary bridge over Jordan Creek.

To mark the milestone, the Skagit County Commissioners will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Marblemount Bridge on Thursday, October 29, at 10:00 a.m. The event will be held in the U.S. Forest Service parking lot just east of the bridge and will be free and open to the public.

The two projects restore important transportation links for East County residents while addressing long-term infrastructure needs and damage caused by severe flooding.

Historic Marblemount Bridge Gets New Lease on Life

The 96-year-old Marblemount Bridge has undergone an extensive rehabilitation programme designed to extend its service life, improve safety and restore two-lane traffic.

The project was fully funded through an $18.5 million Federal Highway Administration grant.

Skagit County Public Works contracted with Stellar J Corporation in the spring of 2025 to undertake the major repair and maintenance project. Prior to rehabilitation, the aging bridge was operating under weight restrictions and was limited to one-lane traffic.

The structure faced a number of significant maintenance concerns, including a deteriorating paint system, structurally deficient truss elements and gusset plates, corrosion in connections within the steel floor system, missing fasteners, leaking joints and deterioration in portions of the bridge deck.

The rehabilitation work addresses these deficiencies, removes the previous load posting and returns the bridge to two-lane traffic, while preserving its historic importance to the region.

Temporary Jordan Creek Bridge Restores Access After Flood Damage

The second major project followed the destructive December 2025 flooding, when a log jam formed in Jordan Creek upstream of Rockport Cascade Road.

Floodwaters diverted around the western bridge abutment and washed away approximately 70 feet of roadway, severely affecting access in the area.

On April 11, 2026, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that Skagit County would be eligible for public disaster assistance related to damage caused by the December floods. The funding can reimburse the County for eligible construction and leasing costs associated with the temporary Jordan Creek bridge.

Skagit County subsequently contracted with Franklin Pacific to install a temporary Acrow bridge across the damaged section of Rockport Cascade Road and Jordan Creek.

The temporary crossing can remain in service for as long as necessary while the County develops plans for a permanent replacement.

County officials have indicated that designing, funding and constructing a permanent bridge will be a multi-year undertaking. The federal disaster declaration, however, provides an important pathway for the County to continue moving toward a long-term solution.

Community Celebration Recognises Collaborative Effort

The October 29 ribbon-cutting ceremony will bring together project supporters, County staff, members of the design team and community stakeholders. Speakers are expected to highlight the engineering, planning and collaborative efforts involved in completing the two projects.

Beyond their engineering significance, the projects represent the restoration of vital transportation connections for residents and communities in eastern Skagit County.

The reopening of the historic Marblemount Bridge and completion of the temporary Jordan Creek crossing mark an important step in strengthening local infrastructure, improving mobility and enhancing the region’s resilience in the face of future challenges.
