Sant Seechewal directs strict action against those polluting Kala Sanghia Drain

Calls for coordinated crackdown, regular monitoring of STPs, and industrial checks to curb pollution

Jalandhar, June 6: Rajya Sabha Member and renowned environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on Friday directed officials of multiple departments to take stern action against those found polluting Kala Sanghia Drain. Chairing a review meeting on efforts to make the drain pollution-free, Sant Seechewal urged officials from the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), and Sewerage Board to adopt a coordinated strategy to prevent any direct inflow of sewage waste into the water body.

The MP emphasized that First Information Reports (FIRs) must be registered against individuals or industries found polluting the drain, with regular inspections to ensure compliance. He also directed Jalandhar MC and PPCB to closely monitor operations at Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure proper sludge management, warning of action against operators failing to follow environmental norms.

Highlighting the need for strict oversight of industrial units, Sant Seechewal instructed officials to monitor industrial discharge points and penalize those violating pollution control guidelines. In a significant move, he also asked for the activation of the water treatment plant at Jamsher Dairy Complex, ensuring that only treated water from dairies is allowed into the drain.

Additionally, the MP reviewed progress on the bio-mining project at Wariyana and proposals for a biogas plant at Jamsher, aiming to further improve the region’s environmental conditions. He also directed Jalandhar Municipal Corporation to supply water as per guidelines as excessive water supply could clog the functioning of STPs and the drain.

Sant Seechewal’s directives mark a renewed push for sustainable waste and water management in Jalandhar. Additional Deputy Commissioner Budhiraj Singh, District Revenue Officer Navdeep Bhogal, and representatives of various departments were present on the occasion.
